Clear Email Address Cache in Outlook

Monday I received an e-mail from a colleague’s personal e-mail address.  He was calling sick and asked to to complete a few tasks, and to contact him by e-mail if I had any questions.  I send him an e-mail, but I wanted to remove his personal e-mail address from Outlook’s address cache.  I would hate to accidentally send him a message at home when it should have gone to his work e-mail or worse, accidentally using his personal e-mail address on a respond to all.

I remember reading a post at How-To Geek regarding clearing out e-mail addresses from Outlook’s address cache file.  The directions work for Outlook 2007 also.

A Thank you to the folks at How-to Geek.com

Outlook 2007 and the picture placeholder

Over the last few months, my wife was getting frustrated with Outlook 2007 (part of Microsoft Outlook 2007 with SP2.)   She subscribes to a few websites which offer coupons to print to help save on the grocery bills.  These e-mails are HTML enabled, and have lots of pretty pictures.  I know most of the smart people out there say “Yikes! Don’t view HTML enabled messages.”, but to be honest I like them myself.  And I know this isn’t the best security, but if you are not on my “safe-list”, then your HTML or rich text messages are set to plain text. or the HTML code is not displayed.

Now, back to her problem which became my problem.  None of the Rich Text or HTML messages were being displayed.  So I started searching the Internet and found several post regarding this issue.  Most of them suggested I run regedit and look for where Outlook was keeping the temp files and delete them.  Th reason is the temp directory is full.  Make sense to me;  how many times have you gone into a temp folder to see a ton of old Office documents that were never deleted after working on those documents.  Still the problem remained.

I figured, hey maybe Office got messed up and maybe I should repair it.  So then I logged into my account in Windows XP and checked my settings and found no problems.  I then said, to myself; “self, let’s check the registry settings on my account and compare them to  the Mrs.”  I could not find anything wrong or different when comparing the registry settings between the two accounts.  I even went as far as opening each message, clicking on the Microsoft logo in the upper left corner, click the editor button, scrolled down to Display e-mail content, and removing the check mark next to “Show Picture placeholder.” So after running through these tasks and from posts I found, nothing worked.

So after dealing with this problem, I decided to make it easy on myself by creating a new local account in Windows XP, migrating all documents, favorites, pictures, mp3, videos, and PST files.  Afterwards Outlook behaved correctly and all the messages were displayed the way the should be. Her old account is disabled so I can go back and look for what was causing this issue.  Because you know I will see this again from another family member or friend.

I know, some of you will say install Thunderbird, or say wipe out XP and give her an account in Linux.  But she is not ready for a major change.  Maybe when we replace the old family PC.  What I might do is setup and account for her so she can start to learn Ubuntu Linux and compare it to Windows 7 when it is released in late October.

Complaints About OpenOffice

Over the weekend, I had to download about 10 different documents written is Microsoft Office 2003 or earlier.  Because I really want to move away from Windows and stay Linux only, I said to myself; “Self – Let’s use OpenOffice to open all of these documents, fill out what needs to be filled out, save, print, and e-mail them to the correct recipients.”

So I downloaded all 10 documents, saved them into a folder on the Desktop, and then used OpenOffice to to read them.  Now comes the problem, each document opened, and I could see all the text, and logos, but each document had tables.  The tables were setup in a form format, and they were a mess.  I then said; “There is no way these documents are supposed to look like this.”  I tried to modify the tables and set cell the way it should be.  But I don’t know how they should look.  So I had to save the documents to my XP partition and reboot to Windows.

So now I am back in XP, I open each document with Microsoft Office 2007, and the documents look 100% better!!  All the cells are aligned correctly, even documents that I opened in OpenOffice which were two pages long, were actually only one page in Office 2007.

I completed my work in Office 2007, printed and saved and rebooted into Ubuntu 9.04.  I copied each document back from the XP partition, into a new sub-folder on my Desktop, and then opened each in OpenOffice.  And each document still looked like a mess, but now the mess had my information in each field.

I’m not sure why Open Office was giving me a hard time about documents with tables.  To me, this is ridiculous, how can anyone expect OpenOffice to be a replacement for Microsoft Office when it can’t open documents with tables?  I’m going to search the Internet for some answers, maybe even post in Ubuntu Forums.  You can give Microsoft all the grief you want about Vista, but in my opinion, Microsoft Office is still the best.  If Microsoft would build a version to run native in Linux, I would purchase it today, or yesterday when I needed it.

Installed SP2 for Office 2007

Well, I installed SP2 for Office 2007 this morning.  The file was about 297MB, which downloaded in no time.  Installation took about 15 minutes to complete.  After installation I was asked to reboot the PC.  Afterwards I was able to access everything Office 2007 with no problems.  I have to remember next time to grab a screen shot and post it here.

I did check to see if PDF and ODF was available in Word, and it was.  They say I should see an improvement in Outlook, but I didn’t see it on my old PC.  I also saw I can save open source spreadsheets in Excel, but I didn’t have time to try it.

Release of SP2 for Office 2007

Microsoft has released SP2 for Office 2007.  I guess I will be downloading the SP within a few days.

Update:

I was feeling sick yesterday, and joking I had the swine flu…turns out it was just a cold.  I read some more of SP2 for Office 2007.  It looks like I will be able to open native ODF documents.  Sounds good.  But some wanted to know about Calc file extensions; could the be opened in Excel 2007?  Usually I wait a few weeks before installing a service pack, whether it is from Microsoft or not.  But since I don’t have anything planned for this weekend, maybe I’ll complete the service pack install on Friday night.

Office 2007 SP2

I just read that Microsoft is planning on releaseing SP2 for Office 2007, as soon as April.  However, release dates always get pushed back so who knows when it will be released.  Although I am not a hugh Microsoft fan, I have to admit I like Office 2007, and Outlook is my e-mail client for my XP box.

I usually wait about a month before I download and install any service packs, just in case there is an unknown bug with the installation or a performance hit.
